Reader's Retreat 2010
Wed, September 1st – Sun, September 5th
UPDATE: July 27, 2010.
READER'S RETREAT 2010 IS NOW CLOSED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INTEREST. ALL BEST WISHES TO YOU
That's right, four luxurious days focused on the art of reading. It's books, books, books-- nothing but the love of books. Well, okay-- some other wild stuff, too. But mostly?
Books . . .
To clarify, this is not a writers workshop, nor is it a publishers workshop. This is not a book club where everyone is reading the same story. Rather, this is a place to gather with other people who honestly believe there simply aren't enough hours in the day to spend nuzzled between the pages of a good book. Of course, there will be lots of time to exchange notes with other attendees and be introduced to new authors and old friends. Naturally, this will take place at different times in the day, not least of which is mealtime in the vintage beauty of Rockywold Dining Hall, but we have also created space, a Chapter Break, as it were at the end of each day, before the dinner bell rings.
As you know, at Cambridge they have beer and talk, at Oxford sherry and conversation. Well, at Squam we will have beer, wine, sodas, juice and nibbles on hand for informal gatherings at the lodge each afternoon from 4:30 - 5:45 pm. If you aren't familiar with the wide, seemingly endless porches wrapping around Greenwood Lodge (which will be our base during the retreat) let's just say a cold drink, a good conversation and a rocking chair on this porch, that has water views from every turn, can be a mighty fine way to relax after an arduous day of reading.
You will need to pace yourself, after all, because each evening we will have a salon in the lodge's great room with a fire going, if weather dictates. The salons are intended to be an open discussion and will be led by some pretty wonderful hosts who between them have rather wild and wide-ranging eclectic tastes, but who are anchored together in their passion for reading. Robert Birnbaum and Lauren Cerand will team up to spark a discussion on Thursday night. Bethanne Patrick and Laini Taylor will be taking the helm on Friday night. (note: this is one event you don't want to read about-- this one, you gotta be there!)
And, don't forget, you can always slip away in a canoe or kayak to read off on an island somewhere, bring your book to the beach, or toss it in your backpack and carry it up to a mountain top and do a little reading there. As you will see, there is no shortage of ways to relax and read while at this lakeside retreat.
